About this video
This five-minute visual prologue introduces the possible origin of Hammer’s alien signal. A distant civilisation sends a stellar-powered transmission across deep time; on Earth, the artifact appears beside catastrophe, survival and human memory—from ancient mass extinctions to the Younger Dryas and the modern discovery that begins the novel.
Context
The alien civilisation, signal and recurring artifact form Hammer’s fictional cosmology. The film uses real extinction history as a narrative structure rather than claiming that the artifact caused those events.
‘The Great Dying’ properly names the Permian–Triassic mass extinction about 252 million years ago, which is one chapter in this much wider story. Late-Pleistocene megafaunal losses were geographically uneven: many North American losses fall near the Younger Dryas, but some declines began earlier; Australia’s principal megafaunal extinctions occurred much earlier. The evidence does not establish one simultaneous global event or one universally accepted cause.
